“I always wonder why birds choose to stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on Earth. Then I ask myself the same question” – Harun Yahya
Through my photography, I aim to purposefully document the beauty of who we are and our relationships with those we love. Showcasing what sets us free to be ourselves.
Hello, I’m Erika – the photographer behind Free Bird Photography. Although I had a curiosity and profound interest in photography at an early age, I did not plan on becoming a photographer. I received my first film camera in high school and published my photographs in the school yearbook and local newspaper. Yet, I had a strong scientific calling as well that led me to study the brain and obtain a degree in Cognitive Science from the University of California at San Diego. After graduating, I decided to combine another passion of mine, animals, and move to Fort Collins, Colorado to attend veterinary school at CSU. I quickly discovered that my heart wanted to be artistic and science wasn’t doing it for me. So I got my camera back, started taking pictures of anyone or anything that would let me and haven’t looked back since.
I live in Fort Collins, Colorado with my husband, daughter, and many pets. I’m girly, tend to be a bit fervid, and won over by an ice blended coffee with soy from Coffee Bean (come to Colorado already!). I believe in paying it forward, fate and the healing power of ice cream. Pretty things (Anthropologie) and amazing light make my heart flutter.
I take on clients all throughout Colorado and my home state of (Southern) California.
Please read the Style section for more specifics about the photographic process.
