vacation in central america
January 19, 2009 · Personal
I finally got around to downloading some of the photos I took (which, I’m sad to say, aren’t that many and even fewer worth showing) while we were in Central America for 18 days. The trip was pretty successful – we toured almost the whole of Guatemala and visited a lot of El Salvador (gorgeous beaches and waves!), stayed in wonderful hotels and stayed in not-so-wonderful places, got food poisoning and the best to eat was Pizza Hut (!). Life there goes to a much slower beat – which was frustrating and enviable all at the same time – and there are lots of children and dogs wondering the streets. Toddlers ride along on motorcycles, each parent held for their own accountability. Heavily armed men only took a day or two to get used to seeing at every street corner.
Anyway, here are some photos to take a look at as a recap of our trip —

Amatitlan, Guatemala
- Amatitlan, Guatemala
- Lago Amatitlan (Amatitlan Lake)
- Children in Guatemala
- Courtyard outside our room at Hotel Casa Santo Domingo – Antigua, Guatemala
- Casa Santo Domingo – Antigua, Guatemala
- We had lots of soda on our trip. I was lucky enough to get a fly in a Pepsi.
- Cathedral in Antigua, Guatemala
- Our view from Hotel Atitlan (volcano in background) – Lago Atitlan, Panajachel, Guatemala
- Santiago – a town off of Lago Atitlan. The main language here is a Mayan dialect that sounded like pretty jibberish
- Taken at an outdoor market
- Christmas Eve – San Salvador, El Salvador
- El Salvador
- Our new friend – Herman, the friendly crab! We met him at a beach at Costa del Sol, El Salvador
- Herman liked to tumble in the waves
- Herman – we took way too many photos of him
I have some more that I will post soon! (Hopefully!)
